Haleakalā Sunrise Bike Tours: What the Ride Is Today
No bike tour starts at the summit any more. You watch sunrise in the park, then ride the switchbacks from about 6,500 ft, outside it. Riders 15 and over.
A Haleakalā sunrise bike tour today is a sunrise and a short, gentle ride, not a descent from the summit. You watch the sun come up in the national park, the van brings you back down to about 6,500 ft, just outside the park entrance, and the riding starts there. The famous rides down from the summit ended in 2007 and never came back.

Bike Maui runs both sunrise bike tours sold here. The guided one is from about $275 a person on the booking platform when we checked, rated 4.5 from 5 reviews. It meets at the Haiku Marketplace on Maui’s north shore, with no hotel pickup, and its dates are below.
Why the ride no longer starts at the top
The National Park Service stopped commercial downhill rides inside the park on 10 October 2007, after a bike tour client died there, and found that the in-park tours “posed an unacceptably high risk to park visitors”. Before that, about 90,000 riders a year rode about 38 miles down from the summit, the Associated Press reported.
Since 1 February 2023, a Maui County ordinance has limited bike tours to Haleakalā Crater Road between mile markers 3.0 and 9.5, from sunrise to sunset, and to Baldwin Avenue between 8 am and 1:30 pm, never on Wednesdays or three Hawaiian holidays. Riders must be 15 or older.
Cyclists on their own can still ride the park road for the $15 per-person fee, but not its trails.
How the guided morning runs
You check in at the Haiku shop between 2:30 and 4:00 am, depending on the season; Bike Maui puts the drive there at 45 minutes from Kīhei and 75 from Kāʻanapali. The listing’s itinerary:
- Van to the park, about 1½ hours, and sunrise there, another 1½.
- Van back down to about 6,500 ft, 30 minutes.
- The guided ride through upcountry Maui, 1½ hours including the safety briefing and photo stops.
- Van to Makawao, then 1 hour in town for breakfast and a look around.
Bike Maui says sunrise riders finish around 10:30 am, back in Haiku.
The price covers the bike, helmet, rain gear, a backpack, the guide and entry to the park. In Bike Maui’s words, “We do not provide any food other than coffee and cocoa at our shop,” so the Makawao breakfast is at your own cost. Bring money for it, plus the water and snacks the listing asks for.
The listing doesn’t say outright whether riders need their own sunrise reservation. Haleakalā EcoTours, a company linked to Bike Maui, is on the park’s list of sunrise tour operators and the price includes park entry, but confirm it when you book.
How much riding is there?
Less than some riders expect. Bike Maui puts the average grade at about 5%, and reviewers describe an easy coast: “Very easy descent and with a guide you get a road block which makes it more easy!” (October 2026). A self-guided rider in October 2025 put the riding at “2 x 15 minutes” and wanted more, and a three-star reviewer warned that “anyone who’s a cyclist and expects real downhill riding will be disappointed”.
So the tour suits people who want the sunrise plus a scenic, escorted roll through upcountry Maui, not sport cyclists. If that’s you, the guided ride is the one to book.
Guided, self-guided or the daytime Express
The self-guided sunrise tour, from about $242 and rated 4.4 from 6 reviews, is the same morning ridden at your own pace. Its listing calls the Makawao stop a “no-host breakfast” and asks you to bring cash and something warm. Bike Maui asks its riders to know how to use hand brakes and to have recent riding experience, and groups of more than six must book a guided ride.
The Daytime Self-Guided Express, from about $121 and rated 5.0 from 3 reviews, skips the sunrise and never enters the park: a van takes you to the 6,500-ft staging area, you ride the switchbacks down through Haleakalā Ranch, then ride again from above Makawao back to Haiku. County rules keep tours off Baldwin Avenue on Wednesdays, so if your date is a Wednesday, ask how the lower leg runs.

Who should take a van instead
All three listings rule out children under 15, riders over 300 lb (136 kg) and anyone who has been diving in the previous 24 hours. Bike Maui also rules out pregnant riders and asks riders to be at least 4 ft 10 in tall. If any of that applies, a van tour gives you the same sunrise: Skyline Hawaii’s sunrise tour states no minimum age and picks up from hotels and condos. In pregnancy, the park advises asking a doctor before going up at all.
For the cold at the top, read what to wear; is the sunrise tour worth it sets the bike against the van tours, and the homepage has every option.
